It’s critical to understand acid as the main cause of tooth decay. Cavities are caused by acid eating away at our enamel. One of two ways—directly through what we eat, such as citrus fruits, or indirectly through the oral bacteria that break down the sugars we ingest—can introduce acid into our mouths.

Ultimately, determining if a food is acidic or sweet/starchy will help you determine whether it contributes to tooth decay. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar, kombucha, and sour candies are examples of acidic foods. Foods that are sweet or starchy include candies, soda or other drinks sweetened with sugar, fruit, bread, cereal, pasta, and crackers.

Tooth decay is more likely to occur the longer these things interact with your teeth. For instance, drinking soda all day or munching on a sticky caramel treat increases the quantity of sugar on your teeth. This sugar is a favorite food of bacteria, which results in an acidic environment and increases the risk of tooth decay.

To help prevent tooth decay and preserve your teeth:

  • Limit your intake of sugary foods and processed grains.
  • Consume acidic foods sparingly or as part of a meal.
  • Reduce or stop drinking soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • Water swish after meals and snacks.
  • Keep your mouth healthy by regularly brushing to remove plaque (floss at least once a day and brush twice a day).

And always remember to stop by frequently so we can clean up tartar accumulation and look for early indications of deterioration!
